The "USE-LESS Milltour" project continued the collaboration between Lower Saxony and Scotland focused on sustainable design strategies. The term "Milltour" symbolized the textile mills where textiles were produced or processed. This initiative introduced "Local Production" as a new focal point of the long-standing academic partnership. In the summer of 2023, students and faculty from all participating universities embarked on a ten-day journey through Scotland to explore the local textile industry. They engaged with industry partners to discuss the challenges and opportunities of local production and developed potential solutions together.
This endeavor was a strategic initiative of the USE-LESS Center for Sustainable Design Strategies, aiming to provide both parties with insights into the local textile industry. A reciprocal visit by the Scottish partners to Lower Saxony on the same topic was planned for the 2024 academic year. After the trip, the findings were to be compiled digitally and showcased in museums in Scotland and Lower Saxony for long-term exhibition. Additionally, the results were to be presented in academic journals and at conferences.
Alongside the long-standing strategic partners, HsH, Robert Gordon University (RGU), and Heriot-Watt University (HWU), numerous companies from the Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, and the Outer Hebrides supported this initiative.
